The Best Beaches in the Sarasota Area, Ranked
One of the first questions people ask when they move to or visit Sarasota is: "Which beach should I go to?" The answer depends on what you're after — powdery white sand, quiet seclusion, great shelling, family-friendly calm water, or a lively atmosphere with dining and shopping nearby.
After years of living on and exploring these shores, here's my honest ranking of the best beaches in the Sarasota and Manatee County area.
1. Siesta Key Beach
There's a reason Siesta Key has been named the #1 beach in America multiple times. The sand here is 99% pure quartz — cool to the touch even on the hottest days, brilliantly white, and impossibly soft. The beach is wide, the water is clear and warm, and the overall experience is stunning.
Best for: Families, sunbathers, anyone who wants the quintessential Gulf Coast beach experience. Heads up: It gets crowded on weekends, especially in season (December–April). Arrive early or go on a weekday.
2. Bean Point, Anna Maria Island
At the northern tip of Anna Maria Island, Bean Point is where the Gulf of Mexico meets Tampa Bay. The result is stunning turquoise water, soft sand, and a secluded, undeveloped feel. It's the closest thing to a private island beach you'll find without leaving the mainland.
Best for: Couples, solitude seekers, nature lovers. Note: There's limited parking and no facilities — bring everything you need and pack it out.
3. Lido Key Beach
Located just south of St. Armands Circle, Lido Key offers a more refined beach experience. After your beach time, you're steps away from boutique shopping, galleries, and excellent restaurants at the Circle. The beach itself is beautiful — white sand, clear water, and a wide shoreline.
Best for: A beach day paired with shopping and dining. Pro tip: Grab lunch at one of the Circle's restaurants and then walk straight onto the sand.
4. Coquina Beach, Bradenton Beach
On the southern end of Anna Maria Island, Coquina Beach is a local favorite. It's wider and less crowded than many of the other beaches, with excellent facilities including a playground, café, and volleyball courts. The water tends to be calm and clear.
Best for: Families with kids, volleyball players, anyone who wants amenities nearby.
5. Longboat Key Beach
Longboat Key's beaches are the quietest and least crowded in the area. With a more residential feel and no commercial development right on the sand, this is where you go for peace, privacy, and a long walk along the water. Access points are scattered along the key.
Best for: Long walks, quiet mornings, and the feeling of having a beach to yourself.
6. North Lido Beach
The northern end of Lido Key offers a quieter, more natural experience than the main Lido Beach. It's popular with locals and has a less developed feel, with dunes and native vegetation framing the shoreline.
Best for: Nature lovers, walkers, and anyone who wants Lido's beauty without the crowds.
7. Cortez Beach
Just west of the Cortez fishing village — one of the oldest working fishing communities in Florida — this beach offers a more authentic, old-Florida feel. You might see fishing boats heading out while you're settling into your beach chair.
Best for: Authentic Gulf Coast character, history buffs, and anyone who wants to avoid the tourist crowds.
When to Go
The best time to visit Sarasota beaches depends on your priorities:
- December–April (Peak Season): Perfect weather, warm water, but crowded beaches and higher parking demand.
- May–June: My personal favorite. Warm, fewer crowds, water is warm, and the crowds thin out after spring break.
- July–September: Hot, humid, afternoon thunderstorms likely — but the beaches are quiet and the sunsets are spectacular.
- October–November: Gorgeous weather returns, water is still warm, and it feels like a secret.
The Bottom Line
You can't go wrong with any beach in the Sarasota area. The real joy of living here is having this many options within a short drive. Whether you're looking for the perfect sand, a quiet morning walk, or a full beach day with dining and shopping — it's all here, and it's all spectacular.
