Sea turtle nesting season is still underway on Gulf Coast beaches through October, and it's now in its most exciting phase: hatching. Loggerhead nests laid over the summer are hatching and heading for the surf every night, and Longboat Key alone has recorded more than 1,300 nests this season, roughly a quarter of Mote's entire survey area. Remember: give nests plenty of space, never use flashlights or flash photography on the beach at night, and report stranded or disoriented turtles by calling Mote's stranding line. Manatee Season & Kayak Eco-Tours
April through October is prime time to see manatees grazing the open seagrass flats, mangrove creeks, and passes of Sarasota Bay. The best way to encounter them up close is from a kayak or slow-moving paddleboard, keeping a respectful distance. Local outfitters run guided eco-tours through the mangrove tunnels and tidal creeks around the keys, and the Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat at the Bishop Museum in Bradenton offers free-admission weekends all year to meet rescued manatees up close.

Myakka River State Park is spectacular in late summer and early fall — the wetlands are full, wildlife is active, and the temperatures start to ease. The Humane Society of Sarasota County always needs dog walkers and cat socializers, Cat Depot in Sarasota runs a teen volunteer program and welcomes adult cat care volunteers, and Satchel's Last Resort and Nate's Honor Animal Rescue in Bradenton run on volunteer power (dog walking, cat cuddling, event help). The Food Bank of Manatee in Bradenton takes weekday sorting and packing shifts year-round, and All Faiths Food Bank posts new volunteer slots every week. UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County welcomes volunteers at eight community gardens and its Master Gardener program, and Meals on Wheels delivers to homebound seniors every weekday. Habitat for Humanity of Manatee County also takes construction, ReStore, and office volunteers in Bradenton.

Felts Audubon Preserve Bird Walk with Manatee Audubon
The Manatee Audubon Society opens the Felts Audubon Preserve in Bradenton with free guided bird walks on the first Saturday of every month, October through April. The next walk is Saturday, November 7 at 8 AM: miles of pine flatwoods trails, a scenic observation tower, and nesting raptors. Free, all experience levels welcome.

And starting November 1, the Celery Fields has Boardwalk Bird Naturalists on duty daily from 8:30 to 10:30 AM at the Palmer Blvd and Raymond Road gazebos, ready to help you spot and identify the morning's migrants.
