Mote Marine is one of Sarasota's crown jewels — a world-class marine research laboratory and public aquarium on City Island. It's not your typical aquarium experience. Mote is an active research facility where scientists study sharks, manatees, sea turtles, coral reefs, and right whales, and you can see that work up close.

The aquarium features touch tanks, shark encounters, manatee exhibits, and an underwater viewing tunnel. The adjacent Sarasota Bayfront park offers kayak and paddleboard rentals, guided eco-tours, and seasonal programs. Mote also runs sea turtle nesting walks during summer months — a magical experience you won't forget.

The Celery Fields is Sarasota's premier birding destination and one of the most important wetland habitats on the Gulf Coast. This 300-acre regional stormwater facility has become a world-class bird watching site — with over 200 species recorded, including roseate spoonbills, bald eagles, sandhill cranes, and dozens of migratory species.

The site features multiple elevated boardwalks, observation platforms, and a 36-foot-tall birding tower that offers panoramic views of the wetlands. The adjacent Celery Fields Community Garden adds another dimension to the experience. Early mornings are magical — mist rising over the marshes, wading birds feeding, and the kind of stillness that makes you forget you're in a city of 55,000.

Myakka is one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks — nearly 12,000 acres of wetlands, hammocks, and prairies stretching along the Myakka River just east of Sarasota. It's the kind of place that reminds you why people move to Florida in the first place.

The park offers miles of hiking and biking trails, including a canopy walkway through the treetops, an observation tower overlooking Upper Myakka Lake, and guided airboat tours across the lake. You'll see alligators sunning on the banks, wading birds, otters, and during dry season, occasionally a Florida panther passing through. Kayaking and canoeing on the Myakka River is serene and uncrowded.

Big Cat Habitat & Gulf Coast Sanctuary

This family-run sanctuary on Palmer Boulevard rescues and provides lifetime homes for big cats, bears, birds, and other animals that can't be released into the wild. Founded by Kay Rosaire, it's a labor of love — not a commercial zoo. You'll see lions, tigers, cougars, black bears, and a menagerie of rescued animals in open-air habitats. The intimate, educational experience is a far cry from a theme park.

Jungle Gardens

A Sarasota institution since 1939, Jungle Gardens is a 10-acre botanical garden and wildlife park on Bird Key. Strolling through the lush, winding paths, you'll encounter flamingos, alligators, tropical birds, and other exotic animals amid towering palms, banyan trees, and flowering gardens. It's a beautiful, relaxing experience that feels like stepping into another world — right in the heart of Sarasota.

Habitat for Humanity Sarasota

Build homes, build community. Habitat for Humanity brings volunteers together to construct and rehabilitate affordable housing for families in need. No construction experience required — they'll teach you everything on site. Build days are typically Saturdays, and the sense of accomplishment at the end of the day is real.

• ReStore: Volunteer at the Habitat ReStore — a donated home improvement store that funds the building program

Summer Food Bank Urgency

Summer is the toughest time for food banks. When school meal programs end, hundreds of thousands of children lose access to reliable daily nutrition. All Faiths Food Bank needs approximately 800 volunteers from May through September to maintain operations during their Campaign Against Summer Hunger. It's one of the most impactful volunteer commitments you can make.
